Borderlands 3 (2019)

Decisionvirus

Among Us memes are on the decline, but they got a little bump with the votingest election in US history. The lolbaters haven't played it in a couple of months, but we did have a few rousing sessions of griefing and dysfunction.

Between the polarization, the pandemic, the contested election, and the personalities involved, the pillars of democracy have been slathered in a thick coat of meta. It's amusing, anyway:

Even Kevin came in with a dad joke:

High/low country

The album isn't new or anything, just decided to use the art.

This is a bummer, let's talk about Nike, Fedex, and Pepsi demanding that Washington change the name of its football team.

July 4th weekend has arrived and most of SoCal is on lockdown. Just not us. So everyone's here. Angelinos, Inland Imperials, Zonies - everyone.

I have a few welcome out-of-state visitors, but the next few days will be all about the pool and man cave.

Exploration

What does a responsible reopening of society look like? I'm not sure anyone knows. Other than a few trips to work, I've gently transitioned to the front porch and then a ride out to get a milkshake and check out the gross red tide water and Windansea.

For Jon's postponed bachelor party, we gathered around a virtual poker table from something like 9pm to 2am.

Plenty to do

Another week of quarantined programming, video games, and hitting f5 on economic news.

The recent peak was a chance to sell most of my "is this a dip?" stock and ETF holdings for a modest profit. The glaring exception is oil, which is now both a headline and a punchline.

Biohazards

The uncertainity of two weeks ago has given way to various stages of compulsory home isolation.

Our March GBES event was bookended with the staff telling us that breweries and dine-in would be shut down statewide starting the following day.

Still, for the scale of the change, everyone's seemed to carry on in a reasonably professional manner.

Friend groups have organized video chat kickbacks, including a screening of Velocipastor.

Fourteen days later

Two weeks ago it was uncertain how this covid thing would play out. I don't think much has changed. I get the feeling we'll look back on this as either the biggest overreaction since terrorism or the epic disaster we absolutely could have avoided.

Leaders have struggled with messaging - even when it's something simple like "be careful but don't panic".

Wild week

The last week of February was one to remember. Or forget.

This coronavirus thing has been a weird mix of sensationalist news/stocks, people quietly buying out canned food and masks, and a completely unchanged day-to-day.

We had made a date for the next installment of Pandemic Legacy S1 with Seryan (portmanteau) about a month ago.

Not willing to tempt fate, we decided it'd be best to innoculate ourselves using a combination of homeopathic remedies.

Up and back

We headed up the coast for some holiday time with the family.

We played a lot of Codenames, spent some time at the beach, and roamed between the parents' house and Ted's.

There was tons of food, both of the home-cooked variety and the restaurant variety.

By far the highlight of the entire holiday was stopping by California's own Potbelly in Irvine. Why even go to the east coast anymore?

It's nicer indoors

Winter has arrived, it's cold and wet. But that's why there's egg nog and 500W graphics cards.

We took Lola and Kafka up north for Thanksgiving. I stumbled upon - but did not try - a culinary revelation: corned beef taquito. Now I need to go back to Glendale.

On the last 85 degree day, the GBES trekked from Circle 9 (home of an amazing pilsner) to Quantum, with a stop for grub at Common Theory.

Apexes

Taking a few weeks off for the mcl tear, I did a photo session at volleyball. I started with a post-mounted off-camera speedlight triggered by the on-camera flash. It had the best lighting (side lighting woo), but was hard to keep the flash out of the frame. Probably would have been better to use the 20mm rather than the 50.

Between games I put the speedlight on camera. Not quite as nice.

Another lap

I'm on MCL tear number... err too many. Still, that just means no vball or sball, I can still game and do GBES events. For Brian's expedition, we started with Tiger Tiger donuts and finished at Street Car for some unbelievably hot chicken.

Mama Ritchie came down for a weekend. There was a sunset yak trip, an ill-fated (for Kafka) trip to Gravity Heights, and all the usual activities.

New games

The August-September handoff has been hot and muggy - perfect weather for AM runs and surf sessions followed by afternoons in the cave.

E3 2019

Without a doubt, Gearbox/2K conducted a masterful exhibition of Borderlands 3. They checked all the boxes:
