Risk Of Rain 2 (2020)

Review | 2021.11.27
Pre-omicron

Rewind 19 months:

Omicron seems to be taking off worldwide and while we have some idea of what to do with pandemics now, if this variant resists vaccines we could be in pretty bad shape. If the markets are any indicator, people are worried that this will break our already stretched finances/medical staff/supply chains/public calm.

So let's escape all that and talk about streaming, books, video games, and fish.

Everything is cool

Breakthrough cases? Pshhh, this is fine. Right?

The canvas patio enclosure came in. The front porch is no longer a wind tunnel, nor covered in tree detritus.

Slow progress on the backyard structure. Weekdays have been pretty busy and weekends have been hot. The 2x2s on the roof numbered something like 40 to span the width. This was the first of three sections. Yeah, it's a big project.

Lambos or shambos

Big moves this week for the two tickers I've been following most closely. First, some (dark) giggles about a company I don't go near in any sense:

And a PSA on crypto:

Fresh off the upward movement for SPCE following their FAA approval, Virgin Galactic announced that Richard Branson would fly on July 11.

Decisionvirus

Among Us memes are on the decline, but they got a little bump with the votingest election in US history. The lolbaters haven't played it in a couple of months, but we did have a few rousing sessions of griefing and dysfunction.

Between the polarization, the pandemic, the contested election, and the personalities involved, the pillars of democracy have been slathered in a thick coat of meta. It's amusing, anyway:

Even Kevin came in with a dad joke:

The four horsemen

You already know about the covid, now you know about the sharks. The (relatively mild) brushfires have given the sunlight a pleasant orange tone.

So Jes and I strolled down to Black's at dusk. I was hoping to get some awesome shots of the apocalyptic sunset behind surf silhouettes, but the marine layer disappeared the sun before splashdown. Still, decent waves resulted in a good photo session with the 500, gallery below.

Go right

Covid continues, but the surge appears to have tailed off some. I guess this is the new normal until one of the many "almost-there" vaccines works out.

Erik recently had his pool resurfaced with (approving nod) fiberglass. This may be in my future, so I'm going to go check it out when he hosts an unofficial League of Sport pool vball event. His flyer really encompasses August 2020 and demonstrates a photoshop ability I never knew he had.

Revisiting

Risk of Rain 2 added some content so we dove back in.

Apexes

Taking a few weeks off for the mcl tear, I did a photo session at volleyball. I started with a post-mounted off-camera speedlight triggered by the on-camera flash. It had the best lighting (side lighting woo), but was hard to keep the flash out of the frame. Probably would have been better to use the 20mm rather than the 50.

Between games I put the speedlight on camera. Not quite as nice.

Another lap

I'm on MCL tear number... err too many. Still, that just means no vball or sball, I can still game and do GBES events. For Brian's expedition, we started with Tiger Tiger donuts and finished at Street Car for some unbelievably hot chicken.

Mama Ritchie came down for a weekend. There was a sunset yak trip, an ill-fated (for Kafka) trip to Gravity Heights, and all the usual activities.

New games

The August-September handoff has been hot and muggy - perfect weather for AM runs and surf sessions followed by afternoons in the cave.

Deeper dive

August meant it was time again for the annual Vegas trip. The Silverton was a pretty chill spot that was convenient for us, but there was good and bad. I killed it at craps, and Matt at the giant Wheel of Fortune machine. As usual, pai gow was a slow, losing battle. Corey and I posted up at a roulette table while we were waiting for the crowd to thin out elsewhere. Three times we caught the dealer (wheeler?) clearing his chips off a square Corey had won - pretty darn sketchy. For the rest of the weekend the name Roger was a synonymous with infamy.

Sweltering

July is beach month, we did some vball at dog beach where Lana and Kaf and Herman got some swimming in.

Shar's been over a couple times as well. And Kaf got to join the GBES at Kilowatt brewing.

Beating the heat

The Women's World Cup and Gold Cup have offered some exciting and anxiety-inducing soccer.

It was time to drain and refill the pool.

I concreted in the light housing.

The GBES event this month was Gravity Heights. Finally, an alternative to Karl Strauss in the Sorrento Area, dog friendly too.

The pizza is phenomenal.

I was shocked and dismayed to find that Lightning Jack's closed.

Back to it

After travel and catching up, things are getting back to normal.

A couple wildlife/roof incidents convinced me to push tree trimming to the front of the queue. There is lots of greenery to clear out.

At poker night at Ryan's, he scrounged for a second deck and found a rather vintage option.

Jes took me out to see some tribute bands at Belly Up.

Some improvements

The lolbaters crew have jumped on the early access to Risk of Rain 2. It's remarkably similar to the original, but in 3d so not similar at all.
